Solid Waste
The City of Wetaskiwin collects, diverts, and/or disposes of solid waste from local customers, and ensures all disposal operations meet the rigid safety, environmental, monitoring, recording, and reporting parameters of Federal, Provincial, and local standards.
Waste diversion programs and recycling are important facets of meeting City Council's solid waste diversion goals in order to extend the life of our current landfill.

Garbage Subscription Options
The City of Wetaskiwin has a garbage subscription program that offers a user pay approach to to waste handling. Residents pay for waste services based on the volume of garbage they generate.
Do you have the right size garbage bin for your family’s needs? How do you know which size bin to pick?
Garbage is picked up in the City of Wetaskiwin once per week. It is important to know how much garbage you and your family accumulates in a week. Once you have that information, it is easy to choose the correct size bin. Use the chart below to choose the right size:
Weekly garbage accumulation | Garbage bin size |
Up to 2 standard black garbage bags | Small bin (121 L.) |
3 to 4 standard black garbage bags | Medium bin (242 L.) |
5 to 6 standard black garbage bags | Large bin (363 L.) |
It is important to choose the correct sized bin for your needs to ensure your bin is not packed too tightly, is not too heavy, and the lid can close properly (to prevent animals from getting into the garbage).
If you have any questions or would like to change the size of garbage bin you have at your residence, call the utilities department at 780.361.4453.

Bin Size | 2020 Rates (per month) |

Waste Collection Routes
The City of Wetaskiwin is divided into four sections to maximize the efficiency of our residential waste collection routes. Collection occurs from Tuesday to Friday each week (with exceptions on holidays) and is carried out by two automated residential collection trucks. Each truck collects trash from an estimated 450 bins per day, and only unloads once at the end of the day.
