Sustainability is more than a buzz word for the City of Wetaskiwin. We believe in role modeling sustainability, and send our 'Trash Talk Thursday' facts to staff every week to help raise awareness and create conversation starters.

Here they are:

  •  Aluminum loses no quality during recycling. Aluminum cans can be recycled forever!
  • An automatic dishwasher uses less hot water than doing dishes by hand. An average of 6 gallons less per cycle or over 2000 gallons per year.
  • 2,650 litres of water is needed to make one cotton t-shirt (that's 27 bath tubs)!
  • McDonalds & Starbucks have joined forces to build a fully recyclable/compostable cup.
  • 12% of a households carbon footprint comes from the clothes dryer.
  • A Mexican Company 'Biofase' now makes cutlery and straws from avocado seeds. They completely biodegrade in 240 days. 
  • Canada just passed a bill that bans the captivity of whales and dolphins.
  • Polyester and Lycra takes 20 -200 years to break down in the Landfill. Nylon stockings take 30-40 years. By contrast, denim takes only 10-12 MONTHS and wool takes 1-5 years to break down.

  • There will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050.
  • Recycling one 3 oz. aluminum pet food can saves enough energy to power a 60 watt light bulb for over 2 hours.
  • Recycling one 5.5 oz. aluminum pet food can saves enough energy to power a TV for over 2 hours.
  • Recycling aluminum cans saves 95% of the energy used to make aluminum cans from new materials.
  • Aluminum is the most valuable material in the recycling bin. Although by weight it is less than 2%, aluminum generates 40% of the revenue to sustain all recycling programs.
  • LED light bulbs are the most efficient type of light bulb and they contain no harmful toxins (like mercury).
  • 5 easy ways to lower your energy costs:
    • Clean your home's furnace filter every 2 months. This can increase its efficiency by 50%!
    • Unplug home electronics when you're not using them. They waste energy and can cost you up to $75/year even when not in use.
    • Dry 2 or more loads of laundry in a row to take advantage of an already warm dryer.
    • Clean out your lint filter before every load of laundry. A clogged filter can increase energy use up to 30%.
    • Replace your incandescent or fluorescent bulbs with LED bulbs. Incandescent bulbs give off 90% of their energy as heat.
  • Paper towels aren't recyclable and in the US alone, 13 billion pounds of paper towels are used each year! Use reusable cloths instead!
  • Kitchen sponges are made of plastic and don't biodegrade. Instead choose a coconut husk scourer, plant-based dish scrubber, or cut up a piece of old cotton towel.
  • France is banning the burning of unsold consumer products. They will now have to donate, reuse, or re-purpose all unsold goods!
  • Eating just one vegetarian meal a week for a year saves the greenhouse gas equivalent of driving 1,867 kilometres!
  • Costa Rica is banning the use of styrofoam containers!
  • Ethiopia planted 350 million trees in 12 hours! This burst of tree planting was part of a wider reforestation campaign named "Green Legacy", spearheaded by the Country's Prime Minister.
  • Keep your house COOL during hot weather by CLOSING YOUR BLINDS! Especially if you have a west-facing window!
  • The Intercontinental Hotels Group will remove all mini plastic toiletry bottles across its 5,600 hotels by 2021! This move will save 200 million bottles every year!
  • In Rome, you can now trade in plastic bottles for metro tickets! Sign me up!
  • Know your "Bio-Plastics". Compostable is biodegradable and breaks down in industrial and (sometimes) home composting systems. Biodegradable is broken down by living things like microorganisms and often requires UV light and warm temperatures to decompose. Degradable breaks apart into smaller pieces that will still exist FOREVER!
  • Hasbro will begin ditching plastic packaging for new toys! The company aims to be plastic packaging free by 2022!
  • Shut down your computer and use a power strip to reduce your energy consumption.
  • Eliminate VAMPIRE power: unplug chargers!
  • Turn off lights when you leave a room or when not needed.
  • How often should you be changing the air filter on your furnace? Here are the recommendations:
    • Seldom used home, single occupant with no pets or allergies - 6-12 months
    • Typical suburban home with no pets - 90 days
    • Typical suburban home with 1 dog or cat - 60 days
    • Multiple pets or have allergies - 30-45 days
