[ARCHIVED] Tennis court repaving is complete

tennis courts open

Wednesday, July 27, 2022 (Wetaskiwin, Alberta) — Game, set, match! Wetaskiwin’s public tennis courts have now re-opened after being closed for repaving.

Work on the revitalization project began June 6 and was completed July 15. The community tennis courts — four courts lined for both tennis and pickleball — are open to the public seven days a week during all daylight hours.

“The tennis court rehabilitation project has been completed ahead of schedule and we look forward to the community enjoying it for many years to come,” said Cal Zimmer, the City’s recreation program supervisor.

The total cost of the project was $220,000, and was completely covered by available grants. The Canada Revitalization Grant covered $144,000 of the total, with the remaining $76,000 funded through the Government of Alberta’s Municipal Sustainability Initiative Grant.

The revitalization was greatly needed, as the court surfaces had degraded and were no longer in a safe, playable condition. To remedy this, a Plexipave hardcourt surface was installed, the same surface that has previously been used at prestigious tennis events such as the Australian Open and the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, California.

The hardcourt surface includes a three-inch base of asphalt topped by an acrylic resurfacer with silica sand and covered with sand-fortified Plexipave colour, which provides a uniform surface texture and determines the speed of play and traction of the court. The life expectancy of the new courts is 20–25 years.

To help preserve the surface quality and achieve longevity, court-users are asked to wear proper athletic footwear (i.e. shoes with non-marking soles).
