1. Where are the cemeteries located in Wetaskiwin?

The City of Wetaskiwin has two cemeteries:

• The Wetaskiwin Cemetery is located at 5516 51 Avenue (north of the water tower)
• The Wetaskiwin Memorial Cemetery is located at 4701 63 Avenue (south of the hospital)

2. How much notice do I need to give the City to arrange for an interment (burial)?

The City of Wetaskiwin required three (3) full business days for burial requests.

4. Can an urn (cremation) be placed with a relative already buried at one of the cemeteries?

Yes! We allow up to four (4) urns (cremations) to to interred with an already occupied lot. The only exception is if the person who is already buried in a plot is a veteran. Spouses are the only ones allowed to be buried on a veteran plot.

5. Can I bury a family member myself?

No! As per City Bylaw 1880-17, for any cremation burials, please contact the Operations Facility office at 780.361.4436.

For any full body burials, please contact a licensed funeral home (as per the Province of Alberta Cemeteries Act).

6. What plot types are available for sale at the cemeteries?

The Wetaskiwin Cemetery (north of the water tower) only has mausoleum vaults available for sale.

The Wetaskiwin Memorial Cemetery (south of the hospital) has full body and cremation plots, and columbarium niches available for purchase.

7. Can I pick out my plot?

Yes! Contact the Operations Facility office at 780.361.4436 to arrange to have a staff member from the public works department show you what is available.

8. What else do I need to arrange a burial?

You will need:

• burial permit; or
• cremation certificate.

The funeral home should provide that for you at no cost.

9. How do I have a monument (headstone) installed on a grave?

You will have to contact a monument company as the City of Wetaskiwin does not install monuments. There is a monument permit required for all new monuments and inscription changes.

10. I purchased a full body plot, but have now decided I wish to be cremated. Is this an problem?

If you have already purchased a full body plot, but you have changed your plans to include a cremation rather than a full body burial, you may still use your plot for a cremation interment. However, you can only have up to two (2) urns interred on the plot.

11. What is included with the cost of a columbarium niche?

Basic engraving on the door of the niche is included, as well as opening and closing of the niche door.

Perpetual care will be an additional cost.

13. What is perpetual care?

Perpetual care is a one-time fee that is charged per interment to help cover the cost of maintenance and care of the cemeteries (mowing, snow removal, etc.).

14. Can I sell my plot back to the City of Wetaskiwin?

Yes! However, as per the Province of Alberta Cemeteries Act, municipalities are only required to pay back 85 per cent of the current market value of the plot and all other pre-paid fees will be forfeited.

The City of Wetaskiwin will require a letter in writing of your intention to sell your plot back to the City of Wetaskiwin and proof of ownership before proceeding with any reimbursement (deed, proof of executor of the estate, etc.).
